Proud moment for North East Lincolnshire Labour. While councillors can only directly influence change at a local level, this achievement is a powerful reminder that dedication, persistence, and strong community partnerships can deliver meaningful results. When we commit to working hard for our residents, we really can make a lasting difference to our area.
This success has been built on collaboration. By working hand in hand with our incredible local charities and community organisations, we were able to identify a clear gap in support for veterans and their families. These groups have long been doing vital work on the ground, often stepping in where formal structures fall short.
Their insight, experience, and passion helped shape a proposal rooted in real need rather than political convenience. Together, we brought forward a motion to Full Council to establish a dedicated Armed Forces Officer for our borough. This was not a straightforward process. It required careful planning, strong advocacy, and the willingness to push through challenges and resistance.
We made the case clearly and consistently: that those who have served our country, and the families who support them, deserve more than words—they deserve practical, accessible, and sustained support.
There were moments when it would have been easier to step back or compromise, but we stood firm. We listened to veterans, to families, and to local organisations, and we carried their voices into the chamber. This was about doing the right thing, not the easy thing. We are incredibly proud to say that we got it over the line. The motion was approved, and the process of recruiting for the role is now underway. This marks a significant step forward for North East Lincolnshire and sends a clear message about the kind of community we want to be—one that recognises service, values sacrifice, and takes responsibility for supporting those who have given so much.
This will be a full-time position, designed to provide dedicated, focused support. The Armed Forces Officer will act as a central point of contact, helping veterans and their families navigate services, access support, and ensure their needs are properly understood and addressed. It’s a role that will bring coordination, visibility, and accountability to an area that has too often relied on fragmented provision.
Most importantly, this role will make a real difference. It will help ensure that no veteran feels overlooked and no family feels unsupported. It reflects our belief that local government has a duty not just to serve, but to stand alongside its community—especially those who have served us. This is what can be achieved when we work together, stay focused, and refuse to give up on what matters.
